Early Bird is showing that e-commerce can grow without increasing emissions. Since launching in 2019, the company has increased its delivery volumes fivefold while significantly reducing its climate impact. Emissions per parcel fell by 51 percent, and in the past year alone, total emissions decreased by 14 percent—all while demand for e-commerce deliveries continues to rise.

– This shows that growth can be combined with a lower climate impact. For us, sustainability is not something to add afterwards; it means building the entire business the right way from the outset, says Sofi Klavacs-Karlsson, COO.

A key part of Early Bird’s success lies in the way the company is designed. By coordinating parcel deliveries with existing newspaper distribution, more parcels can be delivered along routes that are already in place. This reduces the need for additional transport and creates a more efficient, climate-smart logistics solution.

The company has also made considerable progress in its transition to emission-free deliveries. Today, Early Bird reaches a majority of Swedish households with fossil-free delivery options, while last-mile deliveries are already entirely emission-free in several major cities—including Stockholm, Malmö, Helsingborg, Linköping, Örebro, Karlstad and Lund.

In 2025, another important step was taken when Early Bird’s deliveries earned the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, making the company one of the few logistics operators in Sweden with certified home delivery.

– We are seeing a clear shift in the industry, with both consumers and e-retailers setting higher standards. Our ambition is to make sustainable delivery the standard, not an optional extra, says Stefan von Stein, CEO.

Early Bird aims to make its entire distribution network emission-free by 2030—a climate target validated as achievable by the Science Based Targets initiative.

– Our latest Sustainability Report shows that growth in the distribution industry does not have to mean higher emissions, and we are on track with our plan to achieve 100 percent emission-free deliveries by 2030. We look forward to further advancing electrification and efficiency in the years ahead, says Sofi Klavacs-Karlsson, COO.
